Surprised?

A recent survey from ValuePenguin named Decatur as the safest city in DeKalb County. Decatur ranked 28th in the state, above its second-closest competitor Brookhaven at 33.

The survey ranked different cities around Georgia by their rate of violent and property crime, with the former weighted over the latter. While the safest city in Georgia was actually in North Fulton, DeKalb still put two of its largest communities high up on the list.

When the list is broken down by size, Decatur becomes the ninth-safest mid-sized (10,000–25,000 residents) city. Brookhaven also fares well as the 10th-safest large (over 25,000 people) city.

The data was pulled from crimes reported to the FBI in 2014, though not all cities submit such reports. For a full ranking, see our complete story.

DeKalb, and Decatur in particular, have some great homes for sale, whether they're fixer-uppers or near parks good for kids. There's a chic Brookhaven condo and a "stunning" private oasis in Dunwoody. If nothing else, you could live in the town with the state's most liberal marijuana ordinance.
