At the world’s busiest airport, there’s always a need for more workers.
More than 60 airport employers were hiring for more than 1,000 openings at an airport job fair held Thursday at the Georgia International Convention Center.
The positions range from barista to bartender, from driver to cook, as well as server, baggage handler, custodian, construction manager, project manager, foreman, carpenter, engineer and budget analyst.
Hartsfield-Jackson has some 63,000 workers employed by airlines, contractors, the airport itself or other businesses.
Tanquil Thomas, searching for positions in a call center or customer service at the job fair, said she hoped to “walk out of here with at least five [job offers].”
Interest in the job fair is apparently waning a bit as the metro region’s unemployment rate descends.
Last year, the airport held two job fairs, the most recent in October attracting about 3,000 people. Nearly 200 were hired on the spot, pending background checks.
For Thursday’s fair, the number of pre-registered attendees declined by about 500 since last year, said Chermaine Axam, assistant manager of community affairs. The airport may return to one job fair a year, she said.
Riverdale resident Sherrod Clark, who was looking for a third-shift job to supplement his business detailing cars, said the job fair is “in an area where jobs are needed.”
But he said he was looking for higher-paying jobs than some of those offered in fast food.
“Once you get to a certain age, that rate is not going to be great,” said Clark, 40. “They need more career jobs.”
