Atlanta-based Cox Communications, which provides cable service to nearly 80,000 customers in the Macon area, said Thursday that it will begin installing ultra-fast gigabit speed Internet service in all its residential markets by the end of 2016.

Some markets will see work before then, starting with neighborhoods and new residential construction in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Omaha.

Nationally, providers are pushing to ramp up speeds for data-hungry consumers. Both Google and AT&T have said they are considering providing residents in parts of metro Atlanta with gigabit speed, which is 100 times faster than what the average American home has.

Cox Communications, the nation’s third largest cable TV provider, is owned by privately held Cox Enterprises, which also operates The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
