Atlanta protests following the Ferguson grand jury decision have touched on a number of subjects today:
- Local clergy persons, led by the Rev. Markel Hutchins, urged people to stay home and skip the post-Thanksgiving "Black Friday" shopping sprees as a way to protest the decision. "Only when business and commerce and industry are engaged in social conversation do we see massive social change," he said. "That is the point of our call for economic sanctions."
- Atlanta University Students called for change during a gathering at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College.
- One speaker at a rally at Underground Atlanta said "black and brown people (should) build their own education and health and criminal justice systems." Another demanded that Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, nee H. Rap Brown, be freed. Al-Amin is serving a life sentence at Supermax, a federal facility in Colorado known as the country's most secure. He was convicted in 2002 of following the 2000 shooting of two Fulton County Sheriff's Deputies. Deputy Ricky Kinchen died.
More recently the crowd focused for a moment on CNN's Don Lemon.
In case you missed it the reporter formerly based in Atlanta has been trending on Twitter since his offhand remark "obviously, there's a smell of marijuana in the air" while reporting live on CNN from Ferguson. The Twittersphere has been letting him have it.
And now apparently so has his former town.
