GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
George Collins, Rutland
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "Honorable mention would be my first game at Warner Robins High School. It was something that I dreamed about as a little kid growing up and attending WRHS games. It was everything I thought it would be. But without a doubt the 1976 UGA vs. Alabama game in Athens would be the top. The excitement started days before the game, and when we came for Friday's practice at Sanford Stadium, people were already camped out on the tracks and on the bridge, yelling and having a good time. Saturday was just a crazy day, and beating Alabama 21-0 just added to that. The celebration in Athens lasted all night with Milledge Avenue being shut down. It was quite an experience and put us in control for the SEC championship, which we ended up winning by defeating Auburn later in the season." [Collins was the starting right guard on that Georgia team.]
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why? "I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of outstanding coaches during my career. Since my high school coach, Robert Davis, is retired, I would choose Mark Farriba. Coach Farriba was my roommate and teammate at UGA for four years. Mark is still a close friend, golf partner and an outstanding Christian man as well as an outstanding coach." [Farriba is head coach at Stratford Academy, his alma mater.]
3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto? "One of my biggest pet peeves is being on time. Thus, one of my favorite sayings is, 'A dollar waiting on a dime.'"
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "This season we opted not to have spring football and have the extra scrimmage. I liked the second scrimmage, but feel it would be much more useful in the spring. I would like to see the GHSA go back in time and let every school have a spring scrimmage."
