GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Rocky Hidalgo, Glynn Academy
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach?"The GHSA state semifinal last season vs. Ware County. It was such a tremendous environment with two rivals in such close proximity - the atmosphere was electric. It was everything that is great about high school football." [Glynn won 24-16 to advance to the finals for the first time since 1964.]
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?"There are a ton of guys that I could name, but first and foremost, I would choose Ed Dudley. Ed has the strongest sense of moral character of any person that I have ever worked with. In my years working with him, I have never known him to compromise his integrity at the expense of winning football games. Anyone who has ever worked with Ed or played for him understands why he is one of the most respected coaches in our profession by his peers." [Hidalgo was defensive coordinator under Dudley for many years at Walton. Dudley is now offensive coordinator at Wesleyan.]
3. What is your pet peeve as a coach?"I hate when coaches talk about grinding. Grinding implies things are being worn down. I don't like to think about wearing my team down."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed?"I would like to see an appeal process for game suspensions done at the region level where video evidence of the altercation may be submitted and a vote by the head coaches, principals or athletic directors occurs as to whether the suspension was warranted based on the video evidence. I have seen too many players suspended for throwing a punch in a game, and the video evidence of the altercation did not support the suspension."
