1. In case you missed it, I wrote a story for myajc and Thursday's paper that included details about the buyout that Georgia Tech would be facing were it to dismiss coach Brian Gregory.
The short answer is $2.4 million, as detailed in his contract extension signed Nov. 2013, which the AJC obtained through an open records request.
It stipulates that he was to receive 100 percent of the first three years of the new contract (2013-14, 14-15 and 15-16) and then 75 percent of the 16-17 season and 50 percent of his salary in 17-18. The total annual salary is $1.075 million, a slight bump from the original.
Were he let go, then, he would be entitled the full salary for next season and then 75 percent for the following year ($806,250) and then half for the 17-18 season ($537,500). That’s a total of $2,418,750, payable over the life of the contract.
2. I encourage you to take a look at Q&A I did with Tech coaching great Bobby Cremins this morning. Cremins, who will be presented as an ACC legend Friday during the ACC tournament, was typically self-effacing. The most interesting thing he said to me was about why it had taken so long to be named an ACC legend.
Said Cremins: "I’ve had so many accolades. I don’t need any more accolades in my life. I’m very content with everything that I’ve received. Of course, having my name on the floor at Georgia Tech, you can’t have a higher honor. I’ve had all the honors and accolades that I need. As a matter of fact, when they called me, I said, ‘I’m finished with all that.’ They said, no, it was important. And so I said OK.
"I just figured I’m finished with that. But it’s true – I’ve said this many times – the older you get, the better you were. When you think about it, 19 years (coaching) in this league and having played in the league, I do have ACC blood. I really do."
3. Speaking of Cremins, he will be doing the analysis for the IMG radio broadcast from the two semifinal games Friday. As I understand it, he's doing it as a favor to Randy Waters, who is the usual analyst on Tech broadcasts but will doing the play by play for the IMG broadcast. It's typical of the Cremins I've been told about. On the day he's hailed as an ACC legend, he's going to be busy calling the games to help out a friend. Former Tech assistant Dean Keener will be doing the final on Saturday.
