The MARTA Police Department will soon begin using body cameras.
The department will deploy 200 BodyWorn cameras produced by a Decatur-based company called Utility before the end of 2016. They will also be used by officers guarding the city's rail cars, buses and transit stations, as well as the Narcotics and K-9 Specialized patrol units. The cameras capture high-definition video, provide real-time communications capability for the officer and allow for wireless video uploading to secure Amazon cloud storage.
In addition, they are equipped with a newly released Smart Redaction software, which automates the redaction process. According to a news release issued by the company, the technology eliminates the exorbitant cost of manually redacting video to protect public privacy and enables a department to make a video public sooner via public records requests.
Smart Redaction automatically identifies and blurs faces, body parts with identifiable tattoos, and other objects in a video to protect citizen and police officer privacy, the press release said.
