This summer, one of the state’s top college football prospects hung out at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
It's a summer tradition for Tre Lamar, the 4-star linebacker from Roswell High School who is committed to Clemson. Lamar and his father are big fans of drag racing.
The 6-foot-4 linebacker from Roswell High School showed off his strength while at a recent NHRA drag racing event in a pushup contest just for a free t-shirt. He also got to watch his favorite driver, John Ford, in a race.
“It’s really been a father-son thing,” Lamar told the AJC. “Something we really connect on. Something we both like and can just be able to talk about everything there. Both football and stuff outside of football.”
Lamar, who received more than 30 offers from other schools, is fully committed to Clemson.
Here are five things you should know about Tre Lamar:
1) What draws you into racing: "It's awesome. Usually I only get that type of excitement when I'm on the field playing (football). But seeing the car race by you at crazy speeds, stuff like that…I don't know how to explain the feeling, but it's just a lot of excitement goes along with the sport and seeing everyone else talk about it and enjoying it."
2) Have you met any famous people: "In middle school, one of my coaches, coach Willie Anderson, use to play for the Bengals and he has a good relationship with them still so he was able to bring a couple of players on the team …and we got to go meet a lot of the players on the team. One time I got to sit in on one of the Bengals meetings. I got to meet T.O. and Chad OchoCinco…They were awesome. T.O. actually sat at the table with us while we were eating and talked to us. It was crazy."
3) Why Clemson: "It was a decision between me and my family. We just felt that Clemson was the best place for me because I just had a better relationship with the coaches there. I felt like it was more comfortable for there than any other college. And they have a great civil engineering department. I felt at home there."
4) Who was your second choice: "Probably would've been Auburn. I just felt a little more at home with Clemson…it was the atmosphere, the culture of the school and the people around it."
5) Do you have any relatives that played at the collegiate level: "My dad had a basketball scholarship to go to Florida A&M University. My uncle (Anthony Butts) went to Mississippi State for a football scholarship and he was in the (NFL) for like a year or two."
