Good things come to those wait.
When quarterback Evan Shirreffs of Jefferson High School didn't have the opportunity to sign with a major college on Wednesday, he decided to wait – while risking offers from smaller colleges.
His patience was rewarded on Thursday, the day after signing day.
“After I finished working out this afternoon, I checked my phone, and I had a couple of missed calls from Miami,” Shirreffs said. “The next time they called was 10 minutes later. Miami offered, so I committed on the spot. I’ve already faxed in my letter of intent.”

It seems to be an ideal match. Miami struggled mightily with recruiting a quarterback this year because they have one of the best young talents in college football with rising sophomore Brad Kaaya.
Meanwhile, Shirreffs got overlooked by many colleges because he missed most of his junior year with a broken thumb. The 6-foot-6, 200-pounder put up big numbers as a senior with 39 touchdown passes to four interceptions.
When Miami missed on some other targets on Wednesday, a scholarship became available for Shirreffs.
“I have no idea why I got the offer,” Shirreffs said. “When I was down there on the visit, they said it was going to go down to the wire, and that they wouldn’t probably know anything until signing day. After yesterday passed, I was kind of losing hope. Then late yesterday, he said he was going to give me a call. He called around 5 p.m., and the rest is history.”
“It was an emotional roller-coaster, but the end result is what I wanted. It was my favorite school that I visited, and I felt like I was home down there.
Shirreffs also had offers from Georgetown, Ole Dominion and Eastern Michigan.
