In this week's Digital Savant column in Tuesday's print edition and on MyStatesman, I took a look at two huge new entertainment complex that went up late last year, EVO Entertainment in Kyle and Pinballz Kingdom in Buda.

How is that technology? Well, both locations offer some pretty fantastic video gaming while Pinballz also has some state-of-the-art laser tag going if you’re a “Call of Duty” fan. EVO has an eye-popping EVX (Enhanced Viewing Experience) movie theater screen, perhaps the only one equipped with Dolby Atmos sound in the immediate area right now.

If you’re an Austinite looking for something new to do, you could do a lot worse than taking a 20-minute drive south of town to check them both out.  There’s almost certainly something at each location to get your attention.

Here’s an excerpt from the column, which also has a comparison of features for each complex:

So, what are the new entertainment hubs like? Pinballz Kingdom is fun and scruffy, with a mix of new arcade games, an impressive tavern menu and a hardcore laser tag arena — with "Call of Duty"-style weaponry — that the region hasn't seen before. It's brighter and more spacious than the original Pinballz location; on weekends, it's full of kids having parties, pinball wizards getting their tilt on and teens downing pizza slices.

EVO feels more upscale, with a bold, modern design, gigantic arcade machines that dwarf its players and 14 gorgeous new bowling lanes. The movie theater is impressive, especially the EVX room currently showing "American Sniper." The very tall ceilings and spacious lounge areas just add to the sense of large-scale ambitions, heightened by the sticker shock of some of the arcade games — $1.50 at least in most cases for ticket-redemption games.
