A brief spurt of heavy rain moved through metro Atlanta, but the showers have entered Middle Georgia, according to Channel 2 Action News.
In their wake, drivers are dealing with heavy delays on Ga. 400 and I-85 in Gwinnett County.
Two left lanes of I-85 North are blocked by a crash near Indian Trail Road, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Delays span back to the Perimeter.
Further north, two more northbound lanes of I-85 are blocked near Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee by another crash, the Traffic Center reported.
Drivers on Ga. 400 are dealing with roadwork in the left southbound lane at I-285, the Traffic Center reported. Delays are heavy in both directions.
Nearly all of North Georgia hit and surpassed 90 degrees Monday, according to Channel 2. Atlanta is currently at 91 degrees after peaking at 92 before the isolated storms moved through the area.
Those storms were heavy when they moved through Fayette County. Channel 2 meteorologist Glenn Burns said they had the potential to produce small hail, but those storms have weakened and have moved into Lamar and Monroe counties.
The areas that experienced rain have likely seen their last shower Monday.
“High pressure is dominating our weather, and as it does it's really keeping our rain chance on the low side,” Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said. “Not just for today, but as we head into Tuesday. And then by the middle and latter part of the work week, that’s when we'll start to notice a few changes as far as a little bit more moisture, a better opportunity for rain.”
Afternoon highs are expected in the mid-90s through Wednesday before the increased chance of rain helps bring the numbers down. Showers and storms are 30 percent likely Thursday and Friday.
“The Fourth of July holiday could be wet and stormy at times,” Deon said. “It will not be a washout, but certainly expecting to see more rain as we get closer to the holiday during the afternoon and evening, especially.”
That means Atlanta will likely be dry, but muggy, as runners take their marks at the starting line of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race. A few showers could impact fireworks displays, according to Channel 2.
“That rain chance could stick around until the late part of the evening, so just keep that in mind for your Fourth of July plans” Deon said. “You’ll want to have an indoor backup, just in case.”
