A hotel in Iceland owned by Icelandair has apologized after the hotel’s bar sparked outrage by serving a cocktail with a controversial name.
Until this past week, the bar at the Marina Hotel in Reykjavík featured a drink called Apartheid. The cocktail was made with vodka, stout liqueur, cream and roasted hazelnuts, according to CNBC.
An image of the cocktail menu made its way online, and the airline's initial response quickly went viral on Twitter.
In response to a tweet about the cocktail, Icelandair wrote, "Simply scrumptious, enjoy! Happy holidays."
Icelandair later apologized on their Twitter account, saying that the hotel employee who named the drink was unaware of what the word meant. The hotel also released a statement, saying “We apologize unreservedly to all those who were offended by it."
The cocktail has been removed from the menu.
