Bill, a reader, asks if there are apps for Windows PC “that would allow an iPad to print via the PC network printer.”

There are several apps that allow for this, including “PrintDirect” (free), “Printer Pro” ($6.99) and various apps available from printer manufacturers including Epson and HP. These apps work for printers connected to both PCs and Macs. They typically require the printer to be connected to a computer and for the computer to be powered on when you want to print something.

If you’re in the market to upgrade your printer in the future, you could look for a wireless printer that’s “AirPrint compatible.” That means that iOS devices including iPhones and iPads can print directly to the printer without a computer being involved. Apple’s website includes a list of printers with the AirPrint feature.
