The race for the next techy smartwatch is upon us and it appears Google will be next to cross the finish line.

A report from 9to5Google says a Google smartwatch is coming out "sooner rather than later". The report claims: "Google will announce a Nexus watch, codenamed Gem, likely together with the KitKat announcement. The date I have, which … is about a month old, is also October 31st."

So, figuring out when it could be coming out is one thing, but how it will look and function is something else.

The watch is expected to work closely with Google Now, the Android voice search app. Developers are also reportedly working on a lengthy battery life and Bluetooth capabilities. (Via CNET)

A writer for Phandroid says, "This seems to make sense – turning your smartphone into an assistant, as opposed to a smaller version of your smartphone."

But, details on the watch's appearance are pretty hush-hush. This seems to be the only consistent image of what the watch could look like. (Via Geeks Have Landed)

This would make Google the third major brand in the smartwatch game.

Sony released a smartwatch of its own at the beginning of the year and is already releasing a second installment in the U.S. for about $200. (Via YouTube / sonyericsson)

And Samsung's Galaxy gear is getting mixed reviews after its recent release with some saying it's a step in the right direction. Others say it's too limited and buggy. (Via YouTube / samsungmobileusa)

Google may also be releasing the Nexus 5 phone sooner rather than later as well, with some writers believing it could drop on Tuesday. (Via Trusted Reviews)
