Zayden Cook of Chattooga, Antwann Hill of Houston County and Cody Bryan of Heritage of Ringgold held their statewide leads in rushing, passing and receiving yardage, respectively, but Class 6A has a pair of new leaders after the big games last week.
In receiving, Westlake’s Travis Smith Jr. stands first in the highest class with 849 yards. Smith had 10 receptions for 259 yards and two touchdowns against No. 1-ranked Carrollton in a 63-27 loss.
In rushing, Wheeler’s Josiah Allen leads with 1,111 yards. Allen rushed for 256 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries and scored a third touchdown receiving in a 28-27 victory over Cherokee.
Smith, a top-200 national recruit, is more widely known. He is committed to Tennessee.
Allen, despite breaking 1,000 yards for the third consecutive season, is still working to make a bigger name for himself. A student with a 4.0 GPA, Allen is committed to Cornell of the Ivy League.
“However, I’m receiving calls daily based on his performances regarding his recruiting,” Wheeler coach Bryan Love said.
Love said Allen is playing the best of his career now.
“He has always run the ball with a purpose, but he has been running with a different purpose this year,” Love said. “Whatever he needs to do to help his team win, he is willing to do. He has been in the program since he played with our Baby Cats program, which shows his loyalty to the high school and community.”
