COLUMBUS — Lumpkin County swept the GHSA Riflery Championships on Saturday at Fort Benning, edging Madison County by the narrowest of margins in the team competition.
Lumpkin County and Madison County each finished with a team score of 1,130, and Lumpkin won by virtue of posting 46 “center 10” shots, to 45 by Madison.
“We knew the competition was going to be fierce, but we expected to come here and do well,” said Lumpkin County coach Ron Fugate, whose team won the school’s first state title in riflery.
Luella finished third with a team score of 1,126, followed by Henry County at 1,124, Northside-Columbus at 1,121 and Brunswick at 1,120. Defending champion Griffin finished 21 points back at 1,109.
Lumpkin County’s Charles Tritt won the overall individual title with a score of 390.6. Jenna Bethea of Georgia Military was second at 385.4 and Madison County’s Parker Mize was third at 383.5.
“I just kept telling myself it’s just another shot,” said Tritt, who fired a 291 during the team portion and added a 99.6 in the individual final. “This is what I had trained to do. Our team did pretty good. Some of our shooters, this was their first time shooting on an electronic range, so it was a new experience, but they did really well.”
Lumpkin County’s Heather Johnson fired a 283, Mira Grizzle a 282 and Dakota Spivey a 274.
