FLOWERY BRANCH — First-year Falcons quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur sat down with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution to answer a few questions about the offense, Matt Ryan and his backups, Sean Renfree and Matt Simms as the team prepares to face Washington at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Georgia Dome.
Here’s what LaFleur had to say:
Q: How has Matt Ryan become so proficient in the new offense so quickly?
A: It's a testament to how he works and how he studies. He's a consummate pro. Every day he comes in here and from the time he gets here until the time he leaves, he's so focused on getting better.
Q: How complex is the system to learn?
A: It's always hard for a guy who's been in a system for seven years and then to transition into another system. We've worked with some other guys in the past that have had to make that change. It's certainly not an easy one. Just everything from the terminology, the mechanics that we use on certain things, he's being coached different than he has in year's past. Luckily, he's had a lot of great coaches before we got here. Also, he's had a lot of experience and he's able to adapt a little bit quicker than most.
Q: How can Ryan keep the offense rolling?
A: I think that's the product of the culture that coach (Dan) Quinn has set forth. To keep challenging these guys to get better. It's not like we've been flawless on offense. We still have left a lot out there. It's a challenge each and every day to just be the best that you can be at your craft.
Q: How are Sean Renfree and Matt Sims coming along?
A: I think they are doing a great job. First and foremost, they give great support to Matt. We are working after practice each and every day to try to get them up to speed. You never want to have a drop off if somebody else has to go in.
