Georgia State’s R.J. Hunter flew back from the LeBron James Skills Academy in Las Vegas on Sunday, fresh from some impressive performances against 30 of the best college and 80 of the best high school players in the country, according to the camp’s website.
Hunter did well, according to Twitter reports.
He took a few minutes to discuss with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution his experience, the most important lesson he learned and new GSU players Kevin Ware, Jeff Thomas and Jordan Session.
Q: How many games did you play?
A: We probably played around four game sessions and four workout sessions.
Q: I read a lot of tweets with people complimenting your shooting. How did you think you played?
A: I thought I shot it pretty well. I'm usually pretty streaky, but I was consistent all throughout the week. I wasn't doing anything outside my game. If there was a pass to be made I'd pass; if there was a shot, I'd shoot. I think people noticed.
Q: Who stood out to you?
A: Sam Dekker (of Wisconsin) was really good. He stood out. He was aggressive all the time.
There was so much talent there, it’s hard to pick out one player.
Q: Your dad talked about resting you after the Sun Belt tournament and NIT. How is your health now, specifically your knee?
A: I'm good. I'm maturing about that off the court, taking care of my body every single day.
I was growing up. I was playing and not getting enough treatment. I’m taking initiative to come in and get treatment before and after I play.
Whatever she (the trainer) wants to me do, I’ll do it.
Q: Have you had time to play in pick-up games here? How has the team looked?
A: I caught my rhythm right before I went to Vegas. The runs here have been so intense. A lot of players come and play in our spot. We kind of have the pick-up spot in Atlanta.
Ryan (Harrow) and Kevin (Ware) know everybody in the city. If you network with those two you can play with anybody.
Q: How has Kevin looked?
A: Kevin has looked really good. I've never seen somebody so glued in on defense. From 94 feet up he is on the ball. I haven't seen him get drove by a lot. I haven't seen a defensive presence like that on the perimeter.
It helps the team. If he’s on the ball getting pressure, it helps everyone, not just me. When he’s on the ball, he’s helping Ryan.
We are scooping up rebounds on the back.
Q: What was the No. 1 thing you learned after attending the Kevin Durant Camp and the LeBron James Camp?
A: Just to be competitive on every possession, especially at that higher level. If you take a possession off you will be exposed. If I can bring that competitiveness back it will give us an edge.
Q: How have the (incoming) freshmen, Jordan Session and Jeff Thomas, looked?
A: Jordan and Jeff, I was telling someone the other day, they are going to have a couple of banners up. They are disciplined. They shoot it well and play hard. I haven't seen that in young guys like that. I can't wait to see them play.
