It might seem like it’s always sunny in Rob McElhenney’s world lately, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect.
The star and co-creator of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” announced on Twitter that he “was recently diagnosed with a host of neurodevelopmental disorders and learning disabilities! At 46!”
The actor didn’t go into details, but said he’d share the full diagnosis and his prognosis on an upcoming episode of the The Always Sunny Podcast.
“It’s not something I would normally talk about publicly but I figured there are others who struggle with similar things and I wanted to remind you that you’re not alone,” McElhenney tweeted Tuesday to his 1.1 million followers. “You’re not stupid. You’re not ‘bad.’ It might feel that way sometimes. But it’s not true :)”
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: “Neurodevelopmental disorders are disabilities associated primarily with the functioning of the neurological system and brain. Examples of neurodevelopmental disorders in children include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities, intellectual disability (also known as mental retardation), conduct disorders, cerebral palsy, and impairments in vision and hearing.”
McElhenney gained popularity last year when FX aired the docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham” about how he and actor Ryan Reynolds bought the third oldest professional football club in the world, the Wrexham Red Dragons.
The show has been nominated for six Emmy Awards, it was announced Wednesday.
The pair, along with actor Michael B. Jordan, lead Maximum Effort Investments, which recently purchased a 24% equity stake in Alpine Racing.
McElhenney’s tweet about his diagnosis already has more than 40,000 likes and nearly 1,900 retweets, with most showing support.
“Your openness is great for neurodivergent folks like me (who was diagnosed Autistic at 37, but been diagnosed with Dyscalculia and Hyperlexia for most of my like)! I’m was already a big fan!” author Matthew Broberg-Moffitt replied.
“I was diagnosed at 54… Decades of wasted energy. So much pain and shame for so very long,” user Medic! replied.
New episodes of The Always Sunny Podcast drop each Monday, if you want to tune in for McElhenney’s full disclosure.
