Two 9-year-old boys in Utah found a handgun lodged in snow while they waited for their school bus Friday morning, KSTU reported.
According to Alpine School District officials, the boys immediately alerted their bus driver, who contacted police, KUTV reported.
Sam Gonzalez and Landry Collins were waiting for the bus when they saw something stuck on the snow and ice near the sidewalk, KSTU reported.
“I kind of thought it was a phone,” Landry told the television station.
“I thought it was a harmonica so I started chipping up the ice,” Sam said.
It was neither.
Pleasant Grove Police confirmed that the gun was connected to an investigation that led to the arrest of Nicholas William Haun, 38, after a standoff with authorities Thursday night, KUTV reported.
The boys said they knew not to touch the gun, and to let an adult handle the situation.
"I've been told that you should treat every gun like it's loaded," Landry told KSTU.
Police agreed.
“It’s OK to teach your kids about guns. They can be very dangerous and in this situation, it could have very well have been,” Pleasant Grove police Officer Steven Brinton told the television station.
