It was a portrait of an organic Irish potato.

CNN reported that Abosch made the sale for $1.08 million over dinner and a few glasses of wine with an anonymous buyer last year.

Abosch took the portrait in 2010. There are three copies of the portrait. One is in the 46-year-old Irish visual artist's personal collection. Another was donated to a museum in Serbia and the third is the one that was sold to a European businessman.

Abosch said he sees similarities between humans and potatoes "that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species."

"Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted," Abosch said, "I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience."
