Wehrle told WQAD that initially, he thought the snake had a mouse in its mouth.

As he and his friends moved closer, they saw that the snake had caught a catfish.

Wehrle had his GoPro camera on a pole so he was able to capture a vivid shot. He posted the image on Reddit and Instagram, where it has quickly gone viral.

The snake slithered out of the water with its prey and disappeared into the bushes, according to Wehrle.

While the snake looks formidable, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources commented on the photo, identifying the snake as a harmless northern water snake. The snakes are reportedly common throughout Iowa.
