A cat’s curiosity took it on a long journey across Australia that has an unlikely happy ending.

When 10-year-old Emily Schilling’s cat Pippa went missing in February, the girl and her family were hopeful that the cat would return on its own.

But as weeks went by, the family feared that the cat could have been killed by a car or taken in by a stranger.

Mashable reports that in April, the girl's mother received a phone call from a former neighbor.

That neighbor had moved over 2,100 miles away and discovered Pippa when opening a storage container.

Pippa was severely malnourished, dehydrated and underweight.

Unfortunately for the neighbor, many of his belongings were ruined.

The cat must have taken a liking to the storage container as it was being loaded and then became trapped inside.

Pippa's health is now stable and she is in a foster home while Emily's mother decides whether or not to put the cat through more trauma by flying her home.

If Emily gets her wish, Pippa will be reunited with her family soon.
