Humans are apparently not the only ones who like to tip back a few.  Chimpanzees in south-eastern Guinea are the first to be found to take part in regular, habitual drinking.

The Guardian reports that the chimps in Bossou were observed and videotaped the chimps drinking the sap collected by human tappers from raffia palms.

Local communities collect the sap from trees by putting a container under a wedge cut into the tree and the chimps raid the buckets, using leaves as a sponge or scoop to drink the sap that ferments in hours.

The sap has about the same alcohol content as a pint of ale.  On average, the chimps drank about as much alcohol as three pints of Stella Artois, The Guardian reported.

After the day at the tree, one of the chimps acted much like a human who drank a little too much, swinging from tree to tree as the rest of the group got ready for the night heading to their nests.

This isn't the only case where primates have been found to enjoy alcohol.

In St. Kitts, green monkeys, The Guardian reported, take an easier route by stealing tourists' cocktails.
