Cats are known for having an impressive sense of smell. One British man learned the hard way what happens when a cat finds your scent offensive.
According to a report in The Plymouth Herald, Ian Oliver, a husband and father of two, decided to try his Christmas present from his wife: a bottle of Hugo Boss Bottled Night. The fragrance is described on the Hugo Boss website as being "supremely masculine" with "intense, woody spicy notes."
He applied the cologne modestly before a visit to his neighbors’ house.
That’s where Oliver came in contact with Blue, a 3-year-old black-and-white cat. The cat’s owners raised the normally sweet and loving cat after its mother rejected it as a newborn. They’ve noticed that the cat seems to have a particularly strong sense of smell, even for a cat. The owners say the cat has an affinity for tobacco, but hates the odor of Vaseline.
Add Hugo Boss Bottled Night to that list of disliked odors. As soon as Oliver stepped inside his neighbors’ home, Blue jumped up and began clawing him on the back of his neck and head. Oliver dislodged the cat once but it attacked him a second time before Oliver was able to free himself. Oliver was left with a three-inch gash on his scalp.
Oliver was treated at a local hospital, where the wound was sewed up and he received a tetanus shot.
Despite the injury, Oliver holds no grudges against Blue. Ironically, Oliver calls himself a “cheap and cheerful sort of bloke” and doesn’t normally wear designer fragrances.
Blue’s owners were surprised by the cat’s behavior, saying he has never attacked anyone before, and usually runs away if he doesn’t like something. The cat’s owners did state that they spray new fragrances they buy on a card for Blue to sniff his approval or disapproval before wearing them.
The Plymouth Herald reached out to Hugo Boss, but received no comment.
