Q: Are Iranians still chanting ‘’Death to America,’’ or has this been discouraged by the government while negotiations about Iran’s nuclear program are in progress?

—Tony Gardner, Cumming

A: There was a well-publicized "Death to America!" chant in March in which Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, told the crowd: "Of course, yes, death to America, because America is the original source of this pressure."

That chant occurred as the U.S. and Iran were in talks to ease sanctions in return for Iran stopping its work on nuclear weapons.

There has been a “proliferation of Iranian ‘Death to America’ rallies in anticipation of a nuke deal,” the New York Post reported on June 21.

The negotiating countries – including Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia — extended the deadline until July 7.

Q: I recently saw a show that had a panel of political pundits talking about how GOP presidential candidates should try to win different voter blocks, such as the Hispanic vote and Log Cabin Republican votes. What is a Log Cabin Republican and how did that term originate?

—William McKee Jr., Flowery Branch

A: Log Cabin Republicans is “the nation’s original and largest organization representing gay conservatives and allies who support fairness, freedom and equality for all Americans,” the group states at logcabin.org.

The name comes from Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a log cabin and was the first Republican president. He built the Republican Party on the “principles of liberty and equality,” the website states.

The group originated in California in the late 1970s.
