Q: What happened to the comprehensive immigration bill that the Senate passed several years ago, and why hasn’t the House voted on it?
—Hoke Kimball, Atlanta
A: The Senate approved the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act 68-32 on June 27, 2013.
Many Republicans in the House of Representatives weren’t in favor of the bill and GOP leaders issued this statement on July 10, 2013:
“Today House Republicans affirmed that rather than take up the flawed legislation rushed through the Senate, House committees will continue their work on a step-by-step, common-sense approach to fixing what has long been a broken system.”
The House considered a number of immigration-related bills in 2013, including the Visa Waiver Program Enhanced Security Act, Protect Family Values at the Border Act, Immigrant Detainee Legal Rights Act and an amendment to the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Q: It has been noted in the AJC that the Fulton County tax bills were going to sent late. We usually have to pay them by the end of October. I still have not received it. Do you know when they will be sent and when they are due?
—R.L. Lee, Alpharetta
A: The Fulton County Tax Commissioner's website states: "The 2016 property tax bills were mailed in September."
If you’re missing your bill, call the office at 404-613-6100.
The bills, which usually are mailed in July, were delayed because of “an error in calculating property tax exemptions,” the AJC reported in July.
