Q: A recent article on Georgia lawmakers considering exempting seniors from paying taxes to Atlanta Public Schools stated that Cobb and DeKalb counties offer school tax exemptions for seniors. What are the specifics on those counties’ exemptions?
—Leonard Paskevich, Decatur
A: Cobb and DeKalb are two of several metro Atlanta counties that offer school tax exemptions for seniors. In Cobb, seniors who are "62 years of age on or before January 1 of the current tax year" receive an "exemption from all taxes in the school general and school bond tax categories," according to cobbtax.org. DeKalb County exempts residents 62 years old or older with a "household income limit of $10,000 Georgia Net Income" from all school taxes, according to taxcommissioner.dekalbcountyga.gov. Georgia Net Income is a formula provided by the Georgia Department of Revenue and isn't on income tax forms.
Q: Can you tell me why the weigh station at Lee Road is shut down? It seemed to be open 24/7 for months. Now it’s shut down and the lights are turned off.
—Bob Aylwin, Dallas
A: The Douglas County Inspection Station was closed after copper wire was cut and stolen from the station, affecting daily operations. The vandalism first occurred on Feb. 25 and then again on March 10, a public information officer with the Georgia Department of Safety told Q&A on the News in an email. The station was closed on March 11 and "some repairs" have been made. The station reopened March 26, but only during daylight hours because the "lighting in the parking lot areas is still inoperable" until additional repairs.
