Q: I see multiple HOT lane violations every day. How many citations have been issued, and how much revenue has been generated from fines?

— Paul Kurtz, Sugar Hill

A: The State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) issued 35,945 citations for a variety of I-85 Express Lane, or High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lane, violations from February to October, Malika Reed Wilkins, the SRTA director of marketing and communications, told Q&A on the News in an email. These violations include crossing the double solid white lines, entering the Express Lanes without a Peach Pass and violating occupancy requirements. The SRTA collected $163,223.81 in violation revenue during that period. "Keep in mind that there are typically multiple violations for one notice and can include various types of violations (double white line crossing, no Peach Pass, etc.)," Reed Wilkins wrote. "Also, we issue notices by vehicle license plate, so a notice may include violations from both I-85 and Ga. 400 roadways." She wrote that if motorists cross the double white lines or do not meet the occupancy requirements, they also could be pulled over by law enforcement and assessed additional citations and fines. The I-85 Express Lanes are about 16 miles long, stretching from Chamblee Tucker Road, just south of I-285, to Old Peachtree Road in Gwinnett County.
