Q: With all the talk in the Georgia legislature about parimutuel betting and casinos, what happened to the horse track that opened in Birmingham, Ala., a few years ago? Is it still active?
ROBERT NADER, SANDY SPRINGS
A: Birmingham Greyhound Racing is a dog track that also simulcasts horse races from other parts of the country, according to the course website (birminghamracecourse.com) and past stories on AL.com.
The venue, which is located off Interstate 459 at Exit 31, has live greyhound racing throughout the week, according to its website. It also is referred to as the Birmingham Race Course.
Q: A caption in Sunday’s Living & Arts section referred to “Odessa, Russia.” Can you please clarify whether the city of Odessa is in Ukraine or Russia? I know there were periods in history when Russia controlled much of Ukraine, but isn’t Ukraine an independent country, thus making Odessa a city there and not in Russia?
HENRY COLLIER, DUNWOODY
A: Odessa is in the Ukraine. The port city, located in the southwestern part of the country, "stands on a shallow indentation of the Black Sea coast," according to Britannica.com.
