Q: Can I get an update on the DeKalb County animal shelter that was supposed to be built? I haven’t heard anything about it and I don’t think there has been any groundbreaking where the shelter is supposed to be.

—Sheilah Williams, Tucker

A: The DeKalb County Operations and Public Safety Committee met June 9 to consider shelter plans created by Houston-based Jackson & Ryan Architects, which was hired in December.

The proposed design would provide room for 156 dogs and puppies for adoption, as well as 46 cats. Another 65 dogs and 66 cats could be kept in isolation.

The architect estimates the shelter would cost about $9 million to build, but several commissioners and the public expressed concerns about the capacity and cost of the facility, issues that must be addressed before commissioners vote to hire a contractor, county spokesman Burke Brennan told Q&A on the News.

The shelter is planned for 5 acres at the intersection of Chamblee Dunwoody Road and West Hospital Street, near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.

The project is scheduled to be complete in August 2016.

Q: A recent AJC article stated UGA’s new quarterback will be immediately be eligible to play for UGA because he graduated from Virginia. Will he enroll in graduate school at UGA? What are the eligibility rules for college athletes?

—Mike Cooper, Atlanta

A: Greyson Lambert is eligible to play this season at Georgia because he graduated from Virginia – his degree is in anthropology — and will enroll in graduate school.

The NCAA has many different eligibility rules for athletes depending on the circumstances and level of competition (Division I, Division II, etc.).
