Q: This is referring to Ned Yost, the manager of Royals and former third base coach of the Atlanta Braves. Did his dad play baseball as a catcher, maybe in the 1950s?

—John Watkins, Cartersville

A: Eddie Yost, who primarily played third base for the Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels from 1944-62, isn't Ned Yost's father.

Eddie Yost was known as “The Walking Man” for his ability to draw base on balls. He led the American League in walks five times and was selected to the 1952 AL All-Star team.

Ned Yost, who managed the Kansas City Royals to this year’s World Series title, was a bullpen coach for the Braves from 1991-98 and third base coach from 1999-2002.

He managed the Milwaukee Brewers from 2002-08 and took over the Royals in 2010.

Q: Were there congressional hearings after the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Lebanon? If there were hearings, what was their conclusion?

—William McKee Jr., Flowery Branch

A: The Investigations Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee held private hearings as a part of its investigation of the barracks bombing in Beirut on Oct. 23, 1983.

The investigation lasted about six weeks, and the findings were released in mid-December, just about two months after the attack.

The report stated there was inadequate security and ”very serious errors in judgment” by officers, as reported by The New York Times.

The bombing killed 241 Americans (220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers).
