The Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center has moved — but not far.

The new location opens to the public Wednesday about a block away into the building that once housed the Canton Police Department.

For more than 15 years the historical society was in the Cherokee County Historic Courthouse building in Canton. It recently completed the move of its offices and artifacts to the new site next to Brown Park on East Marietta Street in Canton.

The museum now features an expanded gift shop and visitors center, officials say, along with a space dedicated solely to Cherokee County history.

And the improvements don't end there.

An architect has been hired for a more ambitious expansion plan that will add interactive exhibits, retail space, and research and office space, officials said. That project is estimated to be completed in 2022.

The museum collections are available on weekdays by appointment. Admission is free, and museum hours will remain from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
