With Georgia's voter registration deadline looming Tuesday, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has urged residents in the path of Hurricane Matthew to take advantage of the state's online and mobile voter access points.
Kemp said reports indicate that the hurricane may delay mail service in certain Georgia counties, potentially also delaying processing of paper voter registration applications. Those applications are still good as long as they are postmarked by Tuesday, but Kemp said he wanted to be sure residents knew they had alternatives.
“I want voters to be prepared for Election Day ahead of this storm,” Kemp said in a statement. “My office is encouraging voters in affected counties to use these steps if they have any questions about their voter registration status.”
Election registration offices in Brantley, Bryan, Bulloch, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, and Wayne counties have already closed, with more closures expected. Gov. Nathan Deal has already declared a state of emergency in 30 counties, and issued a mandatory evacuation order for parts of Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty, and McIntosh counties.
Anyone can confirm his or her voter status online through the Secretary of State Office's online "my voter page" website (www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do).
