Georgia Army National Guardsmen who returned home this year from serving nine months in Afghanistan are scheduled to attend a second welcome home ceremony Friday at their new headquarters in Macon.

About 200 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team troops helped shut down U.S. military bases around Kabul and turn them over to the Afghan government amid the U.S. military’s efforts to draw down its forces there. The unit suffered no casualties.

Their welcome home event will feature the official ribbon cutting ceremony for their new headquarters. The building features an auditorium, classrooms, conference rooms and an “operations center” for brigade staff.

The former brigade headquarters will house the Georgia Soldier Readiness Processing and Medical Center, recruiting offices and the Georgia Guard Credit Union.

The ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. at 1030 Shurling Drive in Macon.
