Georgia would get out of the business of licensing gun dealers. Guns could not be banned from public housing except by federal law. Licensed out-of-state gun owners would be able to carry weapons here. Hunters could use gun silencers to take aim at their prey.

So said two bills filed in the state Senate, as legislators continue to try to chip away at restrictions despite reluctance by Gold Dome leaders to tackle major gun legislation this year.

Facing the biggest uphill battle toward passage is Senate Bill 101, sponsored by Sen. Frank Ginn, R-Danielsville. It would sweep away restrictions in Georgia on firearms dealers, out-of-state gun owners and gun bans in public housing.

Senate Bill 93, sponsored by Sen. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, has a better chance, despite the fact that a similar proposal backed by the National Rifle Association failed to pass the Legislature last year.

SB 93 would allow hunters to use gun silencers. The bill would penalize anyone who hunts with a silencer illegally — such as without a landowner’s permission — with a three-year ban. Silencers are legal in Georgia, but the law currently prohibits their use for hunting.
