A motorist died in Dalton early today after apparently having a medical emergency and crashing his car into a tree, police said.

Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier said 911 dispatchers received a call just before 4:30 a.m. about a man trying to drive to Hamilton Medical Center with chest pains.

Officers were alerted to be on the lookout for the man’s red Honda Civic, and shortly after 5 a.m., a witness reported seeing a vehicle matching that description leave the roadway on the North Dalton Bypass near Vista Drive and hit a tree, Frazier said.

“The witness told investigators that the driver didn’t hit his brakes or attempt to veer back onto the road before hitting the tree,” Frazier said in an email.

The driver’s name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.
