The DeKalb County police SWAT team was in a standoff Friday afternoon with an armed suspect who eventually killed himself, authorities said.

The man was involved in a domestic incident at a North Druid Hills Road apartment complex.

Officers responded to a call regarding a domestic incident at The Conservatory at Druid Hills apartments, according to Mekka Parish, spokeswoman for the DeKalb County police.

Upon arrival, officers found a 34-year-old female outside the apartment, who exhibited bruising and had allegedly been assaulted by her boyfriend. The two lived together in the apartment complex, police said.

Officers remained outside the apartment and made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the armed suspect, who remained inside, according to Parish.

When multiple gunshots were heard from inside the building, officers pulled back and called in the SWAT team. SWAT officiers made numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact the suspect. The female victim indicated there were no other individuals inside the apartment, so the police waited to obtain a search warrant, then forced their way inside the apartment, said Parish.

A 35-year-old man was found dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Parish said. She said DeKalb police do not yet have a positive ID on the body.
