It’s no surprise GOP

criticizes Iran treaty

It is not surprising that U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss opposes the nuclear deal with Iran. He and his Republican colleagues seem to want to undermine President Obama and oppose everything he does.

This agreement appears to be based upon the same concept used by Ronald Reagan: “Trust, but verify.” Of course, Ronald Reagan would have a hard time in the Republican Party of today, since he believed in the art of diplomacy and compromise.

If this nuclear deal proves to be successful, I wonder how long it will take Chambliss and his ilk to shift all of the credit to George W. Bush? There is no way they will ever admit that President Obama did anything right.

ATLANTA BRAVES

Cobb deserves praise

for landing MLB team

It is interesting to watch the AJC continue to dig to try to find the proverbial “smoking gun” in Cobb County’s bold move to lure the Braves. Virtually every conceivable avenue of “pending disaster” has been forecast.

Time and again, the city of Atlanta has promised improvements, development and better safety. Time and again, there has been nothing. Rather than beating up on Cobb County, perhaps more ink could be utilized to point out failed commitments and how future investment within the city could be enhanced. How about “great job in luring a top sports franchise”? How about “dynamic leadership for greater Atlanta and Cobb County”? How about “job well done”? The sky has not fallen; there’s just a new star rising.

MISTREATED KIDS

Pursue death penalty

for killers of children

It is never too late to ask for justice for murdered children — for Emani Moss, who was starved to death, and for Eric Forbes, who showed signs of physical abuse.

Candlelight vigils do nothing to bring justice for murdered children. Where are the demonstrations demanding the death penalty for the murderers, and for the firing of those responsible for letting those children remain in a house in which they were being starved and abused to the point of death?

It is time that the state ask for the death penalty for the killing of a child. If would-be murderers of children were convinced that upon conviction they would be executed, the number of children murdered would be reduced — meaning America’s children would not suffer cruel, painful, premature deaths.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Government needs to

act on global warming

If the FDA can require the food industry to gradually phase out health-threatening trans fats (“FDA to ban artery-clogging trans fats,” ajc.com, Nov. 7), then why can’t our government ban toxic carbon emissions? This would force the energy industry to provide us with cleaner fuel.

It becomes more obvious every day that the effects of global warming threaten our very existence. We need to make this a priority — before it’s too late.
