If they are criminals, send them home
Conservatives are wrong to attack Newt Gingrich’s proposal for a more measured response in dealing with illegal aliens. His critics accuse him of proposing amnesty, but a better solution might be to put illegal aliens on probation for entering the country illegally. There are Americans who commit far more dangerous crimes who, if their records are clear, are given probation by our courts.
Illegal aliens who are otherwise law-abiding and hard-working should not be severely punished for their one crime (that was nonviolent and committed to give their families a better life). Put these folks into the system and if their record is clear, sentence them to probation — and allow them to assimilate legally into society. If they are criminals, send them home.

Democrats control Senate, White House
Regarding “Need more in GOP who don’t demonize Dems” (Readers write, Opinion, Nov. 25): If the letter writer will harken back to a time before the election of Barack Obama, he will find numerous pieces of legislation offered by Republicans and Democrats that were passed and sent to the president because of the spirit of compromise. I fail to understand how Republicans are capable of doing “everything in their power to undermine President Obama.” The Democratic-controlled Senate has failed to pass a budget. Republicans have submitted “compromise” budget proposals to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the president. The letter writer conspicuously ignores the obvious. Democrats control the Senate and the White House, so how are the minority Republicans failing to compromise with, and/or undermine the presidency?

Why is the law limited to certain groups?
Regarding “Ga. looks to beef up abuse law” (News, Nov. 28), I completely agree that the state’s sex abuse reporting law should be broadened. It is imperative that Georgia’s mandatory reporting law cast a wider net to protect more children from sexual predators. I am shocked that the state’s law does not apply to everyone.
I don’t understand why the law is limited to certain groups. Any adult is obligated to report any knowledge of sexual abuse that has occurred. It is up to us to act as a village and protect children from sexual predators.
