Ross Harris verdict a miscarriage of justice
Thank you for Bill Rankin’s excellent podcast series on the Justin Ross Harris case. As for the trial, not since the 1913 Leo Frank trial has Georgia disgraced herself so thoroughly. And not since the Salem witch trials has American justice been so poorly served. In the Ross Harris trial, we may have even glimpsed what the ancient ecclesiastical courts were like. Moral indignation has again won the day over facts, hard evidence and common sense. Worse, more needless suffering and angst lies ahead for everyone involved as emotions subside and the truth about what has occurred here slowly sinks in.

Winner-take-all system doesn’t serve us well
The Republicans refused to give Merrick Garland a hearing for the Supreme Court because they believed the appointment should be made by the new president in accordance with the will of the people. Should it not be considered the will of the people that Hillary Clinton be elected since she received the majority of the popular vote by a large margin? But of course she was not elected because of the Electoral College. Donald Trump’s constant complaint about a rigged election had merit, but not for the reasons he believed. If you are a Democrat living in a red state, your vote doesn’t count, and if you are a Republican living in a blue state your vote doesn’t count because the Electoral College is a winner-take-all system. Electoral votes should be proportioned in each state. If a candidate gets 40 percent of the vote then she/he should get 40 percent of the electoral votes. Since Republicans now control all branches of the government, they should change the law so that the election of the president truly reflects the will of all the people, otherwise one could think that for them it’s only the will of the people if their candidate wins.
