Let’s not conflate cups and Christmas
Omitting Christmas ornaments, snowflakes and reindeer from seasonally red Starbucks coffee cups is hardly “scrubbing religion from the Yuletide season.” What exactly do those symbols have to do with religion? For that matter, what does spending an inordinate amount of money for a cup of coffee have to do with religion? Giving it to the poor instead might. Considering the significance of the blood of Christ, a simple red coffee cup might actually have more to do with religion than cutesy ornaments or reindeer. But that would require getting off social media long enough to read the Bible.

Return to roots of Republican Party
It’s disheartening to watch Republican candidates for president vie to define themselves as more conservative than their peers. The rise of conservative extremism has hijacked a once reasonably moderate party and pushed it dangerously to the right with unworkable policies and goals, a move that will eventually impede our nation’s progress and return us to recession or worse. It’s clear to me there are elements within the GOP that should be forming their own party if they truly have the courage of their convictions. It’s time for those who represent the thinking majority of real Republicans to rise up and expel the tea partiers, libertarians, birthers and racists from their midst. Only then will we have a chance of making government work as it is supposed to, instead of this continuous partisan bickering that has stalled proper governance for the past six years.

Falcons coaches need a wake-up
In more than 50 years of watching football at all levels, I have never seen or heard of a more stupid decision than the one made Sunday night by the Atlanta Falcons’ coaching staff. It is clear these folks cannot add. Atlanta is on the opponent’s two-yard line. There are approximately three minutes left in the game. Atlanta is behind by four points, and the coaching brain trust decides to kick a field goal. Go figure. Someone on the Falcon’s coaching staff needs a wake-up call. With this sort of thinking, it will be a miracle if our Falcons finish with a 9-4 record.
