Missouri resignation shocking but right
I am shocked at the resignation under pressure of the president of the University of Missouri system. I’m shocked by the lack of explanatory defense or response by the president, with no apparent effort to explain what has been done, or not done, particularly in response to the recent series of campus incidents. As a former student-athlete at Georgia Tech under the legendary leadership of Coach Bobby Dodd, it pains me to see the role that the football players and the economic power of college football seemed to play in the developing situation. With all that on the table, it appears the president did the right thing and, hopefully, will allow more positive developments in the system on behalf of its students and the larger state of Missouri.

Media scrutiny of Carson justified
Dr. Ben Carson has been feeling the heat of media scrutiny and he doesn’t like it. Who would? But the candidate is wrong to suggest that the treatment is unfair and unwarranted. He is, after all, running to be president on the strength of his personal story, so the media has the responsibility to verify the circumstances and claims that are important to Dr. Carson’s candidacy. And if it turns out that Dr. Carson is more Walter Mitty than Forrest Gump, that is still less damaging than failing to provide solid policy proposals to counter the perception that he is unaware of how government actually operates. It is less important to the voters where Dr. Carson has been and more important where he plans to take the country and how we will get there.

Paid patriotism disgrace to Atlanta teams
I read in the Sunday newspaper that the Defense Department used taxpayer funds to buy tributes honoring the military at major sporting events. Just so I understand this correctly, the military had to pay for a soldier to throw out the first pitch at a Braves game; had to pay to hold a huge American flag on the field before a Falcons game; and had to pay to have a color guard ceremony at three Hawks’ games? I hope these professional teams are embarrassed by this behavior now that it is public news. I am sure they announced on their loud speakers at each game how the military had to pay for the privilege of demonstrating patriotism — not. Shame on you. Get your act together and show some respect.
