Why this fixation on climate change?
I’ll never cease to be appalled at the arrogance of the man whom the American voters, in their abysmal ignorance, elected to be our president. ISIS wants to turn the entire Middle East into a haven for terrorists. Israel, our only true friend in that part of the world, is under constant threat from all sides. Another terrorist strike against our homeland is not only possible but increasingly probable. Iran is verging on becoming a nuclear power, North Korea already is one, and both are sworn enemies of the U.S. who would have no qualms about furnishing a nuclear device to a terrorist organization, which would have no qualms about detonating it in Washington, New York, Los Angeles or Atlanta.
The Russian Bear is growling as it did during the Cold War. Our economy, despite some marginal improvement, still suffers from a stubborn recession. China is stealing industrial secrets and pirating proprietary technology. Racial tensions are threatening our cities. Obama speaks to cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and what does he choose as the burning issue of the day? Global warming. Go figure.

More baseball fun, the Atlanta way
I read with great pleasure the Bill Torpy column “Playing ball, Kasim’s way” (Metro, May 21), especially regarding the loss of the Braves to Cobb County, and what we could have had inside the city. He also touched on the “part-time” job of the executive director (of the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority) appointed by our mayor to the tune of $135,000 per annum. This person is already drawing a salary on the City Council. I wonder what the mayor has up his sleeve now, other than riding the streetcar day in and day out.

Flawed stance on gay Scout leaders
I read with interest Larry Bishop’s opinion in Saturday’s AJC discussing the ban on gay Boy Scout leaders. (“Georgia Boy Scouts grapple with lifting ban on gay leaders,” May 23, News). Bishop, an assistant scoutmaster in Marietta, doesn’t want a gay leader for his son because he feels they can’t be trusted. His stance is completely flawed because it assumes a leap from gay to pedophile. In reality, all gays are not pedophiles just like all heterosexuals are not pedophiles. Since there is a certain percentage of pedophiles among both orientations, then Bishop’s argument would suggest that no one should be leading the Boy Scouts.
