An off-duty Cobb County sheriff’s deputy was arrested for allegedly driving drunk and leaving the scene of a wreck, according to police in two counties.

While investigating a hit-and-run crash on Ga. 5, Cobb police located identification belonging to Austin Reese Chadwick inside a vehicle involved in a wreck with a tractor-trailer, according to police reports obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Chadwick, 23, of Woodstock, allegedly left the scene of the wreck, leading Cobb police to contact police in Cherokee County for assistance in locating him, the report states. While the two police agencies were communicating, Chadwick called 911 from his home to report that he had been injured and needed medical assistance.

Officers and paramedics were dispatched to Chadwick’s home, where he was treated for a serious leg injury and arrested.

“He stated he has really messed up,” a Cobb County police report states. “I detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage about his person and breath when he spoke.”

Chadwick confirmed he had been drinking and consented to sobriety testing, according to police. He was charged with driving under the influence, failure to report an accident and failure to maintain lane, all misdemeanors, jail records show.

After being transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for further treatment, Chadwick was booked into the Cobb jail. He was released Saturday afternoon after posting $1,600 bond.
