Woman in bathroom mistaken for transgender, gets scolded by stranger

A Danbury, Connecticut woman said she was approached by a stranger and told she was “disgusting” while in a Walmart bathroom on Friday. The stranger thought she was transgender because of her haircut and baseball cap.

Aimee Toms, 22, took to Facebook in a profanity-laced rant to talk about her displeasure with the whole affair, the Connecticut Post reports. "After experiencing the discrimination they face firsthand, I cannot fathom the discrimination transgender people must face in a lifetime," she said in the video. "Can you imagine going out every day and having people tell you you should not be who you are or that people will not accept you as who you are?"

According to Toms, the stranger came up to her in the bathroom and said, “You’re disgusting” and “You don’t belong here!”

Toms told the Connecticut Post that she believes this is a response to the recent controversial law passed by North Carolina. "I think this is all just a response. No one was telling these people to be scared of transgender people before. No one was telling them that they should be throwing people out of bathrooms," Toms told the Connecticut Post. "As if it wasn't scary enough for transgender people to use the bathroom before."

The Connecticut Post added that Toms is sporting a shorter haircut because she donated her hair to for use in making wigs for child cancer patients.

She told the New York Daily News that she has been referred to as a "lesbian" and "whore" since her video went viral. "People have irrational fears. I'd like for them to know this simply isn't something to be so angry about," she added. Her response video has been viewed more than 49,000 times since it was posted on May 13.
