Your mama always told you to drink more water and stop drinking all that Coke. (Just mine?)
It turns out, she was probably right.
A graphic posted by the Renegade Pharmacist and making its way around the internet purports to show what happens to your body one hour after you drink a 12-ounce can of fully caffeinated, fully sugared cola.
And it ain't pretty.
Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar flood your system, telling your body in the next 10 minutes to release insulin and your liver to turn all that sugar to fat. As if we needed any more of that.
Within 45 minutes, your dopamine levels rise, basically turning you into a sugar fiend. This is the same thing that happens when you take heroin, by the way.
Within 60 minutes, the phosphoric acid binds to calcium, magnesium and zinc, which gets flushed out of your system when the diuretic effects of the caffeine make you go pee. Because you didn't need any of those nutrients anyway, right?
Those 10 grams of sugar you just downed represent an entire day's recommended intake. The caffeine makes your blood pressure rise, and that crash you feel an hour later may send you to the refrigerator again for another can.
