7 things to know now: Jared on Dr. Phil, Paul Ryan and Russian subs

Here's a roundup of news trending across the nation and world today.

What to know now:

1.   Jared Fogle tapes on Dr. Phil: A two-part "Dr Phil" show airing Thursday and Friday will play recorded phone conversations between a Florida woman and Jared Fogle, the former Subway restaurant spokesman. Fogle is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography and having sex with minors. Fogle's conversations were secretly taped after the woman complained to Subway that Fogle had admitted to her that he had had sexual relations with minors.

2.   New Speaker: Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) was elected as Speaker of the House Thursday. Ryan agreed to run for the position if he had the support of the three major Republican factions in the House. He replaces John Boehner, (R-Ohio), who is retiring from the House  at the end of the week. (Updated at 10:56 a.m. ET to reflect Ryan's election.)

3.   GOP Debate: Wednesday evening at the third debate among candidates for the Republican nomination for president the group went straight for the jugular, but this time, it wasn't each other's -- it  was  the media's. Among the highlights – Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio's dust-up; Ted Cruz's slamming of the moderators' questions; Chris Christie on Fantasy Football regulation, and the fact that, on occasion, Donald Trump carries a gun.

4.   Auto-injector recall: Sanofi is recalling its Auvi-Q epinephrine auto-injectors because of a problem with the dose the device delivers to those having allergic reactions. The pharmaceutical company said there have been 26 cases of suspected malfunctions with the injectors, but that no deaths have been reported connected to the problem.

5.  Was that a Russian sub: Are the Russians targeting cables that carry Internet services between the United States and Europe? Maybe. Russian submarines set off an alarm as they neared the cables last month, U.S. military officials report.. While the Russians have the capability to cut the cords, U.S. Naval intelligence officials says it's not likely they will try it.

And one more

The Kansas City Royals came from behind to beat the New York Mets in Game 2 of the World Series Wednesday. Pitcher Johnny Cueto gave up only two hits in the 7-1 win. Game 3 is Friday in New York.

In case you missed it

A NORAD blimp attacked a portion of Pennsylvania Wednesday after it became untethered in Maryland and headed west with, eventually, an F-16 escort. The cable the blimp dragged along behind ended up taking out power lines and leaving thousands without electricity. The device, when not going after farmers, is designed to alert military officials to possible airborne threats.
