Olson was dubbed a hero after he saw a student with a gun walking down the stairs at North Thurston High School in Lacey in April. The student fired a shot before Olson tackled him and held him down.  Because of Olson's actions, no one was injured, including the gunman.

Olson, along with others who have saved lives through their actions, will be receiving the appropriately named Governor's Lifesaving Award.

Olson humbly talked about what happened that day.

"I think I saw a weapon -- he fired it already. My first thought was, “Keep him from firing again,’” said Olson.

Though he didn't have training and he wasn’t aware he was using the technique, Olson performed a tactic known as  Run, Hide, Fight that teaches alternatives to simply locking down in the event of an armed intruder.

People all over and school districts in Washington are teaching the approach now.

Olson, along with dozens of others who saved lives in other situations, including medical emergencies, will be honored by the governor at a lunch Thursday afternoon in Tacoma.
